During her 70 years as monarch, Queen Elizabeth II met with various popes.

In 1951, she met Pope Pius XII when she was still a princess. Then, ten years later, Pope John XXIII. Pope John Paul II met her twice at the Vatican and once in the UK.

In 2010, Queen Elizabeth met with Pope Benedict XVI at the Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Queen made her way back to Rome in 2014 when she returned to the Vatican and met Pope Francis. On that occasion, she was accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away in 2021.

They were 20 minutes late, but she was able to explain their delay gracefully.

I'm sorry to have kept you waiting. We were having lunch with the president.

Queen Elizabeth II—the longest ruling monarch in British history—dedicated her reign to her people, traveling more than any other British monarch.
