The Holy See announced that he will return to his home diocese of Freiburg in southwest Germany on July 1.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Officially, he was the Prefect of the Pontifical Household from 2012 until February 2023. But in practice, he stepped down in January 2020. This was one of his last appearances.<\/p>\n<p>From that time on, Fr. Leonardo Sapienza accompanied the Pope at audiences. The Vatican has not offered any explanation for this.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop G\u00e4nswein explained in his book, 'Nothing but the Truth,' that Pope Francis asked him to devote himself completely to Pope Benedict XVI.
