After two years as Secretary General, Pope Francis appointed him to this new position.<\/p>\n<p>His predecessor, Jesuit Fr. Juan Antonio Guerrero, resigned for personal reasons. The Vatican issued a statement thanking Fr. Guerrero for his service in \u201cputting the economy in order.\u201d In the statement, they highlight his \u201cintense and demanding work.\u201d Among Fr. Guerrero's  achievements is reducing the Vatican accounts deficit, especially in the period prior to the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Caballero studied economics and business at the Autonomous University of Madrid.
