They were announced by Cardinal Manuel Clemente, patriarch of Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinal described Chiara Bandano as a young woman who radiated a luminous joy symbolized by her second name: 'Luce,' or Light.<\/p>\n<p>He also highighted Carlo Acutis' love for Our Lady and the Eucharist. He said that 'he made his suffering an offering and he was happy.'<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Clemente says both were young people who died of illnesses that immobilized their bodies but not their hearts.<\/p>\n<p>The Virgin Mary is the principal patroness of World Youth Day. Other patrons include three Portuguese blesseds: Joana of Portugal, Jo\u00e3o Fernandes, and Maria Clara of the Child Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the host country's dioceses chose the event's patron saints.
