{"id":44314,"date":"2022-01-21T16:08:43","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T15:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www1.romereports.com\/2022\/01\/21\/pope-francis-declares-st-irenaeus-a-doctor-of-the-church\/"},"modified":"2022-01-21T16:08:00","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T15:08:00","slug":"pope-francis-declares-st-irenaeus-a-doctor-of-the-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.romereports.com\/en\/2022\/01\/21\/pope-francis-declares-st-irenaeus-a-doctor-of-the-church\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis declares St. Irenaeus a Doctor of the Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pope Francis has declared St. Irenaeus a Doctor of the Church, adding him to the ranks of 36 men and women who have been recognized for their contributions to the development of Christian doctrine.<\/p>\n<p>The Pope had affirmed his intention to declare the second-century saint a Doctor of the Church during a meeting with the Saint Irenaeus Joint Orthodox-Catholic Working Group in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POPE FRANCIS<br \/>\n<\/strong>October 7, 2021<br \/>\n<em>'Your patron, Saint Irenaeus of Lyon \u2013 whom soon I will willingly declare a Doctor of the Church with the title \u201cDoctor unitatis\u201d \u2013 came from the East, exercised his episcopal ministry in the West, and was a great spiritual and theological bridge between Eastern and Western Christians.'<\/em><\/p>\n<p>St. Irenaeus is thought to have lived between around the years 130 and 202. He was likely born in Smyrna, in present-day Turkey, and later became the Bishop of Lyon in France.<\/p>\n<p>The saint's writings were largely a response to Gnosticism, which posed a threat to the Church at the time by teaching that the faith was merely a symbol for people incapable of understanding challenging concepts.<\/p>\n<p>Even Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI spoke admiringly about the saint during a General Audience in 2007. He described St. Irenaeus as \u201ca man of faith and a Pastor,\u201d and as \u201cthe champion in the fight against heresies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>CT<\/p>\n<p>VM<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 21, 2022.
