In 2022, 10 cardinals will turn 80. That means they will no longer be able to participate in the election of a new pope. Of those 10, six participated in the 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis.<\/p>\n
The first to turn 80 will be Card. Ricardo Ezzati Andrello<\/strong>, Archbishop Emeritus of Santiago de Chile, on Jan. 7. He was created cardinal in 2014.<\/p>\n A few months later, on April 7, Italian cardinal, Gualtiero Bassetti<\/strong>, Archbishop of Perugia \u2013 Citt\u00e0 della Pieve, will turn 80.<\/p>\n Less than a week later, on April 13, Ricardo Bl\u00e1zquez P\u00e9rez<\/strong> will celebrate his 80th birthday. The Archbishop of Valladolid, Spain, paid a visit to Pope Francis at the Vatican in November 2021.<\/p>\n Then on June 6, Archbishop Emeritus of Mexico City, Card. Norberto Rivera Carrera<\/strong>, will cross the threshold.<\/p>\n Two cardinals will turn 80 in September. The first, on Sep. 3, will be Card. Gregorio Rosa Ch\u00e1vez<\/strong>, Auxiliary bishop of San Salvador, El Salvador. He became El Salvador's first cardinal in 2017.<\/p>\n Card. Rub\u00e9n Salazar G\u00f3mez<\/strong>, Archbishop Emeritus of Bogot\u00e1, Colombia, will follow on Sept. 22. Benedict XVI created him cardinal in 2012.<\/p>\n On Oct. 1, Italian cardinal, Giuseppe Bertello<\/strong>, will turn 80. He was the President of the Governorate of Vatican City State from 2011 until 2021.<\/p>\n On Oct. 18, another Italian cardinal, Gianfranco Ravasi<\/strong>, will celebrate his 80th birthday. He is currently the President of the Pontifical Council for Culture.<\/p>\n Then, on Nov. 7, Card. Andr\u00e9 Armand Vingt-Trois<\/strong>, Archbishop Emeritus of Paris, France, will turn 80 and lose the right to participate in future conclaves.<\/p>\n The last of the new former cardinal-electors will be Card.
