It is a temporary appointment until a new director is chosen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The position that was previously held by Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson since four previous pontifical counsels were combined to form the Dicastery in 2016.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cardinal Turkson said he was leaving his resignation in the hands of the Pope after serving his five-year term at the helm of the Vatican's most visible dicastery.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis thanked him for his service in a written statement and announced that as of January 1, 2022, Cardinal Czerny would assume his role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Czechoslovakian-born Jesuit from Canada has worked in the dicastery since 2010, and as the undersecretary of the Vatican's Migrants and Refugees Section since 2016.<\/p>\n<p>BGA <br \/>\n TR: JM<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 23, 2021.
