{"id":45497,"date":"2021-03-23T19:05:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-23T18:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www1.romereports.com\/2021\/03\/23\/leading-scientist-calls-to-fight-tuberculosis-with-the-same-urgency-as-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2021-03-23T19:05:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-23T18:05:00","slug":"leading-scientist-calls-to-fight-tuberculosis-with-the-same-urgency-as-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.romereports.com\/en\/2021\/03\/23\/leading-scientist-calls-to-fight-tuberculosis-with-the-same-urgency-as-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Leading scientist calls to fight Tuberculosis with the same urgency as Covid-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coronavirus shook the world to its core after claiming nearly 1.8 million lives in 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet there\u2019s another disease that\u2019s just as deadly and doesn\u2019t dominate the headlines: tuberculosis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>CARLOS MART\u00cdN MONTA\u00d1\u00c9S<br \/>\n<\/strong>Researcher, University of Zaragoza (Spain)<br \/>\n<em> \u201cFor more than 200 years tuberculosis has been claiming over one, two and even three million lives every year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Carlos Mart\u00edn Monta\u00f1\u00e9s is a scientist who has spent the last 20 years developing a vaccine for Tuberculosis, known as the MTBVAC.<\/p>\n<p>In this short meeting with Pope Francis in 2019, he told the Pope that the research for the vaccine was heading in the right direction, but that everyone\u2019s support is still needed to measure its efficacy as soon as possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a disease primarily afflicting underdeveloped nations, the push to develop a new tuberculosis vaccine has been underwhelming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>CARLOS MART\u00cdN MONTA\u00d1\u00c9S<br \/>\n<\/strong>Researcher, University of Zaragoza (Spain)<br \/>\n<em>\u201cWe\u2019ve been at it for 20 years. The difference being that work on the Covid vaccines began last February and that they were already approved for widespread use in December. So, I think we have a double standard in Western countries. When something affects us closely, we are able to react very quickly, but it\u2019s different when something is going on far away.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Monta\u00f1\u00e9s has already developed a new vaccine that is safe for human use. Animal trials have proven that it protects against respiratory tract infections.<\/p>\n<p>It has been shown to safely trigger an immune response in young children and adults, and its efficacy in protecting infants will be tested in the coming months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr. Monta\u00f1\u00e9s, it will take six months to finalize the approval process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The current BCG vaccine is administered to 90 percent of newborns worldwide. But it doesn\u2019t protect against the pulmonary forms of the disease which are responsible for its transmission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>CARLOS MART\u00cdN MONTA\u00d1\u00c9S<br \/>\n<\/strong>Researcher, University of Zaragoza (Spain)<br \/>\n<em> \u201cIf this vaccine works as well as we think it will, thousands of lives will be saved every month that people are vaccinated. It\u2019s very hopeful, but we need the support of many people.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<p>March 24th is World Tuberculosis Day.
