He was 88 years old and retired. He was part of the congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>John Paul II named him bishop of Rio de Janeiro in 2001, and cardinal in 2003. Benedict XVI accepted his resignation in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>He was archbishop of one of the most important cities in a country with one of the world's largest Catholic communities. He was succeeded by Orani Jo\u00e3o Tempesta.<\/p>\n<p>His death brings the College of Cardinals down to 227 members.
