When the former nuncio in the United States, Carlo Vigan\u00f2, accused the pope of covering up McCarrick's crimes, 24 bishops joined him, in varying degrees, to call for clarification and facts.<\/p>\n<p>The conference's president, Arch. Jos\u00e9 G\u00f3mez, says the bishops are \u201cstudying\u201d the published \u201cfindings.\u201d He also expresses support for the pope for his \u201cpastoral concern\u201d and \u201chis leadership in calling the Church to greater accountability and transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He says the facts presented in the McCarrick Report are \u201canother tragic chapter in the Church's long struggle to confront the crimes of sexual abuse by clergy.\u201d That's why Jos\u00e9 G\u00f3mez expresses his closeness to the victims of the former archbishop of Washington and to all survivors of sexual abuse by the clergy.<\/p>\n<p>He also expresses his \u201cprofound sorrow and deepest apologies\u201d as he and all the U.S. bishops renew their commitment to ending abuse within the Church.<\/p>\n<p>Javier Romero<\/p>\n<p>Translation: CT<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November 10, 2020.
