That's 690 million people, which is 10 million more than last year.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that the coronavirus could further exacerbate the situation and bring that number up to 100 million more.<\/p>\n<p>It's a dramatic emergency for the director of the World Food Program, who will receive the Nobel Peace Prize this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DAVID BEASLEY<br \/>\nWFP Executive Director<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cWe know right now, because of COVID and climate extremes and conflict\u2014man-made conflict\u2014we're facing now 270 million people on the brink of starvation. We need to act, and we need to act right now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The FAO asks all countries to work together to overcome this challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis also intervened, saying hunger is not only a tragedy, but a shame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POPE FRANCIS<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>\u201cIt's caused by an unequal distribution of the earth's resources, to which is added a lack of investments in the agricultural sector; the consequences of climate change; and the rising number of conflicts in different areas of the planet. Furthermore, tons of food are thrown away. In front of this reality, we cannot remain indifferent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The issue is that although the world produces enough food for everyone, there is a lack of access to food products that guarantee proper nutrition.
