He was a great friend of John Paul II and was one of the few people present inside the room where John Paul II died.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He led the Ukrainian Bishops' Conference for many years. He was appointed cardinal in 1998 and participated in the conclave from which Benedict XVI was elected.<\/p>\n<p>With his passing, the total number of cardinals drops to 219.
