The pope emeritus wrote an open letter of thanks for the affection received after the death of his brother, who passed away on July 1.<\/p>\n
He says he did not expect so many letters of support. He points out that he was \u201cdeeply moved.\u201d He also regrets not responding personally to each one due to a case of shingles that broke out on the day of his departure to Germany to visit his dying brother.<\/p>\n
The letter is dated August and would be the first time that the 93-year-old pope emeritus, the longest living pontiff in history, speaks publicly after his brother's death.<\/p>\n
