{"id":46393,"date":"2020-07-31T10:47:42","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T08:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www1.romereports.com\/2020\/07\/31\/be-pen-pals-with-an-inmate-on-death-row\/"},"modified":"2020-07-31T10:47:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T08:47:00","slug":"be-pen-pals-with-an-inmate-on-death-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.romereports.com\/en\/2020\/07\/31\/be-pen-pals-with-an-inmate-on-death-row\/","title":{"rendered":"Be pen pals with an inmate on death row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Receiving a letter is a symbol of hope that someone has you in mind, even for those sentenced to death row.<\/p>\n<p>Stefania Tallei from the Community of Sant\u2019Egidio, explains that there are many good reasons for becoming pen pals with someone sentenced to death row.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>My family doesn\u2019t write me, so I feel very<\/em> <em>lonely...<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEFANIA TALLEI<\/strong> <br \/>\n<strong>Community of Sant\u2019Egidio<br \/>\n<\/strong> \u201c<em>[This project] was born like that, from letters,<\/em> <em>out of simple instruments such as pen and paper, which are also very personal instruments. The<\/em> <em>Community of Sant\u2019Egidio started receiving requests from young people locked up on death row that said, \u2018I know you cannot do much to<\/em> <em>help me, but you can at least write me a letter.\u2019\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She explains that the suffering of the victims\u2019 families is a common issue. Many of them, joined together in organizations, do not support this type of condemnation, saying the death of one who has committed a crime does nothing to make restitution for their actions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>STEFANIA TALLEI<br \/>\nCommunity of Sant\u2019Egidio<\/strong> <br \/>\n\u201c<em>They are persons [primarily] sentenced in the<\/em> <em>United States. Fortunately, we do not have [the<\/em> <em>death penalty] in Italy, nor in Latin America or<\/em> <em>Europe. A large portion of Africa is abolishing<\/em> <em>the death penalty. In Asia and the Islamic world,<\/em> <em>the issue remains a bit difficult. Central Asia has<\/em> <em>abolished it. There are people sentenced to the<\/em> <em>death penalty who are afraid of being executed every day.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, receiving a letter represents a connection with the outside world. Oftentimes, it's also the possibility of forming a real and lasting friendship, even during difficult moments like the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>STEFANIA TALLEI<\/strong> <br \/>\n<strong>Community of Sant\u2019Egidio<\/strong> <br \/>\n\u201c<em>They heavily follow news about the countries in which they have a pen pal on the outside, free.<\/em> <em>Worried letters were coming in concerning the<\/em> <em>situation in Italy, one wrote to me, 'Please, stay<\/em> <em>healthy.' They worried a lot after hearing the<\/em> <em>news, since Italy was the first European country to suffer from the pandemic.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Take, for example, this card that arrived during quarantine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>STEFANIA TALLEI<br \/>\n<\/strong> <strong>Community of Sant\u2019Egidio<br \/>\n<\/strong> \u201c<em>They say to me, 'Find me a friend, a pen pal,<\/em> <em>who can understand me, who can listen to me,<\/em> <em>who does not get fed up with me.'
