Among those voices are those of 152 bishops who signed this letter criticizing President Jair Bolsonaro's inability to deal with the crisis.

Although the letter was not signed by the Episcopal Conference of Brazil, it does hold the signatures of people like Card. Claudio Hummes and other prelates.

Using the title, “Carta ao Povo de Deus,” “Letter to God's People,” they denounce the anti-science discourses, which seek to normalize the suffering of the nearly 90 thousand deceased and 2.5 million infected during the pandemic.

They also warn against political interests that seek to hold on to power at any price, against Catholic Social Teaching.

The bishops say Brazil is in need of serious reforms, but not like those promoted by the president. Those have only worsened the lives of the poor and further threatened the environment.

Daniel Díaz Vizzi

Translation: Claudia Torres

July 28, 2020.
