POPE FRANCIS<\/strong> Pope Francis invited Christians to look inside themselves and determine what is their peace. Is it something which requires payment, or is it freely given by the Lord? He explained that peace is a gratuitous gift that always opens itself to others and gives hope.<\/p>\n SUMMARY OF POPE'S HOMILY<\/p>\n (Source: Vatican News)<\/p>\n Pope Francis reflected on Jesus's words from the Gospel of St John: \u201cPeace I leave you; my peace I give you.\u201d This peace is not \u201cuniversal peace,\u201d the peace that comes from the absence of war, the pope said. Rather it is \u201cpeace in the heart, peace in our souls, the peace we all have within.\u201d<\/p>\n In the Gospel, Jesus says that the peace He will give is not a worldly peace: \u201cNot as the world gives do I give it to you.\u201d The peace of this world, said Pope Francis, is a peace given by the things that are superficially pleasing to me. That peace is a kind of \u201cpersonal possession, something I have in isolation from others, something I keep for myself alone.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a bit selfish,\u201d the pope said.<\/p>\n It\u2019s also a \u201ccostly\u201d peace, because those who seek it must always change what gives them that peace. \u201cIt is costly because it is temporary and sterile.\u201d<\/p>\n The peace that Jesus gives is very different, the pope said. \u201cIt\u2019s a peace that makes you move. It doesn\u2019t isolate you.\u201d Instead, the peace Jesus gives leads you to reach out to others, \u201cto create community and communication.\u201d While the peace the world gives exacts a huge toll, the peace Jesus gives is entirely free, a gift of the Lord.<\/p>\n Pope Francis gave the example from the Gospels of the wealthy man whose barns were filled with grain, who thought he was doing well, and was even looking to build more. \u201cBut God said to him, \u2018Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?\u2019\u201d This worldly peace \u201cdoesn\u2019t open the doors to the future, to heaven,\u201d but is concerned only with oneself.<\/p>\n The peace Jesus gives, on the other hand, is always focused on the Lord.
