Even priests can fall into this temptation of wanting to climb. This is an injustice. This is a humiliation. I cannot tolerate it. FLASH There is no humility without humiliation.<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis said shepherds who don't follow the path of humility are not disciples of Jesus. He called them \u201cclimbers in cassocks.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p><strong>EXTRACTS FROM POPE'S HOMILY<\/strong> <br \/>\n<strong><span style='font-size: 10px;'>Source: Vatican<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span style='font-size: 10px;'><br \/>\n <\/span><em>Reflecting on the day\u2019s Gospel of Mark on the beheading of St. John the Baptist, the pope explained how he was sent by God to show \u201cthe way of Jesus.\u201d The \u201clast of the prophets,\u201d the pope said, had the grace to say, \u201cThis is the Messiah.\u201d<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p><em>The pope said bearing witness to the path chosen by God for our salvation is the path of humiliation. St. Paul explains this very clearly in his Letter to the Philippians: \u201cJesus annihilated himself to death, death on a cross.\u201d This death on the cross, this way of annihilation, of humiliation, the pope said, is also the way forward that God indicates for Christians.<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p><em>The Holy Father pointed out that both John the Baptist and Jesus had the \u201ctemptation of vanity, of pride.\u201d After His fast, Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert, and John was tested before the doctors of the law who asked him if he was the Messiah. He could have answered that he was \u201cHis minister,\u201d and yet he \u201chumbled himself.\u201d <\/em>   <\/p>\n<p><em>The pope said that both had authority over the people and their preaching was \u201cauthoritative.\u201d Yet both had \u201cmoments of lowliness,\u201d sort of \u201chuman and spiritual depression.\u201d Jesus had his moment in the Garden of Olives, and John in prison was tempted by the \u201cwoodworm of doubt\u201d whether Jesus was really the Messiah.<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p><em>Both \u201cend in the most humiliating way.\u201d Jesus dies on the cross, \u201cthe death of the worst criminals, terrible physically and morally,\u201d \u201cnaked before the people\u201d and \u201cbefore His mother.\u201d John the Baptist is beheaded in the prison by a guard on the orders of a king who was \u201cweakened by vices,\u201d \u201ccorrupted by the whim of a dancer and the hatred of an adulteress,\u201d the pope said, referring to Herodias and her daughter.<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p><em>Pope Francis explained that when we try to draw attention to ourselves in the Church and in the community in order to have a position or something, it is the way of the world, a worldly way, which is not the way of Jesus. He said this \u201ctemptation to climb\u201d can also happen to pastors.
