Pope Francis met with members of the Polish trade union \u201cSolidarnosc,\u201d for the organization's 40th anniversary. <\/p>\n
The independent labor union, founded in 1980, was the first of its kind in a Soviet bloc country. Their work to enact political and social change played an instrumental role in ending communism in Poland. John Paul II was a strong supporter. <\/p>\n
Pope Francis said the movement had positive impacts beyond the country's borders. He praised members' commitment to promoting just working conditions.<\/p>\n
