This is the third year this temporary medical clinic has been set up in St. Peter's Square for World Day of the Poor.

Inside, the pope greeted the medical personnel who volunteer at this clinic, offering a variety of specialized medical attention. He also stopped to greet some patients, like this woman, who was particularly moved.

There was of course time for selfies and pictures, as well as for more greetings.

Last year, this walk-in clinic treated about 2,000 people in one week. It played an especially critical role in saving three people who arrived with heart attack symptoms.

Without leaving the square, Pope Francis then visited the Vatican center for the homeless. He affectionately greeted this elderly woman who was forced to live on the streets after losing her home.

Then the pope greeted more people as he toured the facilities, which can house 50 guests. However, even more people may arrive on the colder winter days.

The pope's visit ended with him sharing a snack with some of the volunteers and patients at this new welcoming home, which has brought the peripheries to the very heart of St. Peter's Square.

November 15, 2019.
