{"id":47485,"date":"2019-10-28T15:40:05","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T14:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www1.romereports.com\/2019\/10\/28\/pope-changes-name-of-vatican-secret-archives\/"},"modified":"2019-10-28T15:40:00","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T14:40:00","slug":"pope-changes-name-of-vatican-secret-archives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.romereports.com\/en\/2019\/10\/28\/pope-changes-name-of-vatican-secret-archives\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope changes name of Vatican Secret Archives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With this \u201cMotu propio,\u201d a personal initiative of the pope, Pope Francis has changed the name of the Vatican Secret Archives.<\/p>\n<p>He explains that the word \u201csecret\u201d was a Latin translation of the word \u201csegretum;\u201d a \u201cprivate\u201d or \u201creserved\u201d archive for the pope.<\/p>\n<p>However, the expression \u201csecret archive\u201d has taken on a negative tone, as if it was hidden material meant to defend its own interests.<\/p>\n<p>For this reason, it will now be called \u201cVatican Apostolic Archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cVatican Apostolic Archive\u201d is within the walls of Vatican City.<\/p>\n<p>It was officially opened on Jan. 31, 1612.<\/p>\n<p>Six years ago, on its 400th anniversary, there was an exhibit of some of the documents that are kept on the 52 miles of its shelves.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Clement V's Chinon Parchment to the Templars in August of 1308, the acts of the trial against Galileo, and Enrique VIII's application for marriage annullment were on display.<\/p>\n<p>In March, documents from the pontificate of Pius XII will also be available.<\/p>\n<p>The archive can be consulted free of charge, but are only available to researchers or historians who request access.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>October 28, 2019.
