{"id":47682,"date":"2019-09-06T11:26:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T09:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www1.romereports.com\/2019\/09\/06\/story-of-a-rag-ball-pope-francis-played-with-as-a-child\/"},"modified":"2019-09-06T11:26:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T09:26:00","slug":"story-of-a-rag-ball-pope-francis-played-with-as-a-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.romereports.com\/en\/2019\/09\/06\/story-of-a-rag-ball-pope-francis-played-with-as-a-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Story of a rag ball Pope Francis played with as a child"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pope set aside time for his busy schedule in Mozambique to meet with about twenty young people participating in the programs of the foundation he promoted, Scholas Ocurrentes.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was in the Holy See's nunciature in Maputo, and the young people told the pope how Scholas has helped them foster communities of encounter where they live.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis listened to their testimonies and also received gifts, like this capulana, a traditional African wrap skirt.<\/p>\n<p><em>'Do I have to wear it?'<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They also presented the pope with music.<\/p>\n<p>The pope was very comfortable among these boys and girls whom he affectionately thanked for his visit.<\/p>\n<p><em>'I thank you for this visit, which has touched my heart.'<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One gift especially caught the pope's attention for a very personal reason.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere is one thing that touched my heart a lot - it is the rag ball. When I was a kid I played with a rag ball because at that time they were leather balls, sewn with leather, and they were very expensive.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pope Franics explained that neither he nor his friends had money then to buy the other type of ball.<\/p>\n<p>He also suggested an artistic competition related to\u201d rag balls.\u201d He announced that, if it takes place, he himself would deliver the prize to the winner.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, he left his signature and drank some mate brought to him by Argentine missionaries.<\/p>\n<p>Angeles Conde  <br \/>\nMelissa Butz&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 6th, 2019.
