In his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis continued his catechesis on the \u201cOur Father\u201d prayer. <\/p>\n
This week he focused on how Jesus teaches one to ask God to \u201cforgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.\u201d <\/p>\n
The pope noted that the word \u201ctrespass\u201d means debt in the original Greek of Matthew's Gospel. Therefore he said everyday a Christian needs to ask God to forgive them for their debts. <\/p>\n
Pope Francis stressed that everyone is truly in debt to God as he has created everything. He added that one is only able to love because He loved first; and to forgive because \u201cwe ourselves have received forgiveness\u201d from God. <\/p>\n
The pope concluded by saying that one cannot love God as \u201cHe has loved us;\u201d and \u201cwe need only gaze at a crucifix to realize this.\u201d He invited Christians to pray that \u201ceven the holiest in our midst will never cease to be in debt to the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dear Brothers and Sisters, <\/p>\n
In our continuing catechesis on the \u201cOur Father\u201d, we now consider how Jesus teaches us to ask God to \u201cforgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us\u201d (Mt 6:12). <\/p>\n
Just as we need bread, so we have need of forgiveness. Every day! In the original Greek of Matthew\u2019s Gospel, the word used for \u2018trespasses\u2019 carries the meaning of being in debt, and so Christians pray asking that God will forgive their debts. <\/p>\n
We are truly in debt to God because everything we have has come as a gift from Him: our life, parents, friends, creation itself.<\/p>\n
Likewise, we are only capable of loving because we have been loved first; we are able to forgive only because we ourselves have received forgiveness. <\/p>\n
How can we not recognize, in the bonds of love that precede us, the providential presence of God\u2019s love? None of us can love God as He has loved us. We need only gaze at a crucifix to realize this. <\/p>\n
Let us pray, then, that even the holiest in our midst will never cease to be in debt to the Lord. O Father, have mercy on us all! <\/p>\n
