He was the former Archbishop of Washington in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has declared McCarrick guilty of committing crimes of sexual abuse with minors and adults, \u201cwith the aggravating factor of the abuse of power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time the Holy See has expelled someone from the priesthood also for the abuse of adults.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Theodore McCarrick has appealed against the verdict but it has been dismissed. The pope confirmed this expulsion from the priesthood as irrevocable.<\/p>\n<p>This decision comes just days before the \u201cMeeting on the Protection of Minors\u201d convoked by Pope Francis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, McCarrick's case is not over. In Oct. 2018 the pope commissioned an internal investigation to find out how McCarrick managed to rise up through the ranks of the Church despite allegations against him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February 18, 2019.
