To the pope, Syria is \u201cloved and martyred,\u201d and he has made countless calls to end the civil war that has been bleeding out the country for more than seven years. Iran, Russia, the United States, France, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have all participated.<\/p>\n
Pope Francis recently lamented in horror at the latest chemical attack that allegedly occurred in Syria. He asked for dialogue, instead of using weapons.<\/p>\n
POPE FRANCIS<\/strong> \u201cLet us pray that political and military leaders choose another path, that of negotiation, the only one that can lead to a peace other than that of death and destruction.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n A week before, in front of thousands of pilgrims in St. Peter's Square for the Urbi et Orbi blessing he spoke of extermination in Syria.<\/p>\n POPE FRANCIS<\/strong> \u201c...So that a swift end may be brought to the carnage in course, that humanitarian law may be respected and that provisions be made to facilitate access to the aid so urgently needed by our brothers and sisters.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The pope denounces everyone who is involved in the war, always standing by the lives of the innocent and the Syrians' right to remain in their land.<\/p>\n POPE FRANCIS<\/strong> \u201cIt's a land full of martyrs... We have to pray for these brothers who are in war, and for persecuted Christians. They want to force them out of that land. Let us pray for these brothers and sisters of ours.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n With pain, Pope Francis always laments the suffering of the weakest and the unarmed civilians who have lost everything, even their own lives.<\/p>\n POPE FRANCIS<\/strong> \u201cI make my heartfelt appeal for violence to cease immediately, for access to be given to humanitarian aid \u2013 food and medicine \u2013 and for the wounded and sick to be evacuated.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n He also raises his voice against the interests that prolong the \u201cpiecemeal Third World War,\u201d of which Syria is the major exponent.<\/p>\n POPE FRANCIS <\/strong> \u201cIt is unacceptable that so many defenseless people, and children also have to pay the price of conflict, the price of the stubbornness of heart and peace unwillingness of those in power.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n POPE FRANCIS <\/strong> \u201cI appeal to the conscience of those responsible for the bombing, who will have to answer before God.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The pope continues making constant appeals for the international community to intervene and stop remaining passive before the drama facing 23 million Syrians.<\/p>\n POPE FRANCIS<\/strong> \u201cBeyond the necessary humanitarian aid, what our brothers and sisters in Syria and Iraq want more than anything else today is peace. And so I will never tire of asking the international community for greater and renewed efforts to achieve peace throughout the Middle East, and of asking not to look the other way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n In addition to voicing his opinion, the pope has also kept silent. Especially when he turns to prayer to avoid greater evils.
