The representatives are elected every five years.<\/p>\n<p>It now represents 500 million European from 28 different countries.<\/p>\n<p>The European Parliament has a legislative role, because it writes the 'laws' of the European Union. It also takes care of calculating a budget that affects all of its state members.<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis will travel to Strasbourg to address the parliament.
