The 82-year-old died of a heart attack on March 5th. ;<\/p>\n<p>Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, Egan became a source of comfort for Americans. He drew praise for his spiritual leadership after the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Egan was perhaps the best known Catholic leader in America during his time as head of the Church in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Illinois in 1932, he studied at the North American College in Rome and the Pontifical Gregorian University.<\/p>\n<p>Known for his soft-spoken demeanor, he was an expert in canon law and theology. Ordained as a priest in 1957, he became a bishop in 1985. ;<\/p>\n<p>Egan was elevated to Cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001.
