When Pope Francis meets with world leaders, he always represents\u00a0the smallest nation. But this time, the other state wasn't much bigger.<\/p>\n
On Monday at the Vatican, the Pope held 'cordial\u00e2?\u009d talks with the\u00a0Governor-General of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Rodney Williams.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0two-island nation has a population of under 100,000. And there are about 9,000 Catholics living there.<\/p>\n
The two smiled as they sat down for a 20-minute private meeting. They discussed\u00a0how the Catholic Church contributes to life on the islands, as well as migration and climate change.<\/p>\n
After introducing several members of his family,\u00a0the two exchanged gifts. The governor-general gave the Pope a colorful painting of school children, and he beamed as he studied it.<\/p>\n
Pope Francis gave the leader copies of 'Evangelii Gaudium\u00e2?\u009d and 'Laudato Si,\u00e2?\u009d\u00a0along with a medallion that represents peace.<\/p>\n
As his guests departed, Pope Francis made a familiar request to the governor-general's wife, though in an unfamiliar language.<\/p>\n
'Pray for me.\u00e2?\u009d
\n'I'm going to.\u00e2?\u009d<\/p>\n
And he also reminded the leader to do the same thing.<\/p>\n
'Pray for me. And don't forget.\u00e2?\u009d<\/p>\n
The visit is just the latest\u00a0move to strengthen ties between the states. Antigua and Barbuda also recently appointed an Ambassador to the Holy See.<\/p>\n
