He was 84 years old.<\/p>\n<p>John Paul II first appointed him nuncio of C\u00f4te d'Ivoire and later pro Nuncio in Burkina Faso and Niger. Following this, he was a Vatican permanent observer for the UN institutions in Geneva, and later a pontifical representative in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. He also served as nuncio in Mexico. From 2000-2007, he presided over the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, which prepares the Vatican diplomatic corps.<\/p>\n<p>JMB\/MB<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 30, 2016.
