The former president had previously visited Rome on several occasions. His last meeting with Pope Francis was in 2021. During this audience, the two discussed the socio-economic development of Chile and its relationship with the Catholic Church. In 2011, Pi\u00f1era also met with Pope Benedict XVI, who congratulated him on the rescue of a group of miners who had been trapped almost half a mile underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
