In the days leading up to the swearing-in ceremony, the 34 new Swiss Guard recruits have a busy schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The morning of the ceremony, the Guards started the day with a special Mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the Mass, the recruits and their families held a private audience with Pope Francis. And he took this time to reflect on the important service the Guards perform at the Vatican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, this day is always eagerly anticipated because it gives me an opportunity to publicly express my thanks for the presence and service of the Swiss Guard. You demonstrate a high level of motivation and willingness to serve and this also brings me great joy: such good fellowship among you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, it is widespread among young people to spend free time alone with their computers or cellphones. Therefore, I also say to you young guards, go against the current.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
