In 1978, Argentina and Chile were about to start a war over the Beagle Channel. Years later, in 1984, and through the mediation of John Paul II, they managed to sign a peace agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four decades later, an event was held at the Vatican to commemorate this Treaty. Chilean and Argentine diplomats were present. Pope Francis also participated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
POPE FRANCIS In this context, the Pope made reference to current conflicts. He again criticized countries that talk about peace, but are engaged in selling arms. He said this is hypocrisy. <\/strong>Today, at a distance of forty years, we renew our gratitude for the efforts of all the people in the governments and diplomatic delegations of both countries, who gave their positive support for the contribution to carry forward that path of peaceful resolution, thus fulfilling the yearnings for peace of the Argentine and Chilean people.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/strong>I simply mention two failures of humanity today: Ukraine and Palestine, where we suffer, where the arrogance of the invader prevails over dialogue.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
