It was the Vatican that pointed out that the measures are still in force today.

This clarification by Rome is the response to an article in El País in which this information was revealed.

The disciplinary measures include not residing in Peru, the Cardinal’s native country, and not wearing insignia or habits linked to the cardinal rank. The Vatican assures that there were also sanctions that affected his public activity.

The reason for the measures was alleged sexual abuse committed against a minor in 1983. In response, the Cardinal assured in a letter that he is innocent. He confirmed that the measures were applied to him but that there was no trial. He regrets that the decision was taken unilaterally without hearing his version.

At the same time, the Cardinal assures that Pope Francis allowed him to resume pastoral duties in 2020.

The Vatican, for its part, has indicated that these sanctions remain in force, although, on specific occasions, they have been lifted. It is not known whether Rome recently allowed the Cardinal to travel to Peru to receive a medal of merit from the Lima City Council.

CA
TR: GS

The Vatican confirms that Cardinal Cipriani of Lima, Peru, has been subject to disciplinary measures since 2019.

[24,178,25
