Known as the Chapel of Tears, it is where the vestments for the future Pope are kept. This is where the newly elected candidate goes after accepting the responsibility of becoming the new pontiff. And it is where he often experiences a powerful psychological blow that may bring him to tears: dressing as the successor of Peter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>P. \u00c1LVARO SERRANO, Expert in Church History<\/strong><br><em>Once a Pope has been elected, there is a chapel called the \u2018Chapel of Tears,\u2019 where the pope goes to weep, to say: \u2018I am not worthy. I am going to give my life\u2026\u2019 Truly, it is a martyrdom, because you die to yourself in order to confirm your brothers in the faith \u2014 your brother cardinals, your brother bishops, your brother priests, and your brothers throughout the world; all Christians, all Catholics whom you must now confirm in that faith. That is the Chapel of Tears.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This room is located to the left of the Sistine Chapel when facing the altar. It is normally closed to the public.
