It is believed to be the same cloth with which the saint wiped Jesus\u2019 face as he carried the Cross on the way to Calvary. Christ's face appears to have been miraculously imprinted on the cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This unique relic has been preserved by the Holy See since the 3rd century, and each year, hundreds of pilgrims gather beneath Bernini\u2019s baldachin to admire it, to pray before, it, and to meditate on the beginning of the most important week for Christians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presided over by the Archpriest of the Basilica, Mauro Gambetti, the ceremonial exposition of the relics of the Passion of Jesus Christ kept by the Vatican has continued in this way. The Holy Lance of Longinus and fragments of the True Cross are the other relics only publicly displayed during the Lenten season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PIETRO ZANDER<br><\/strong>Treasury Museum of St. Peter\u2019s Basilica<br><em>According to tradition, it is said to have come from Jerusalem through Veronica, a legendary figure\u2014a woman named Veronica. \u201cVeronica\u201d means \u201ctrue icon,\u201d that is, the true image of Our Lord. In tradition and apocryphal literature, it is told that this woman used a veil to wipe Our Lord\u2019s face on the way to Calvary, and the image of Christ remained imprinted on that veil, which is preserved here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of the oldest and traditional devotions of the Vatican, the brief display of the Veil from one of the four main pillars inside the basilica reminded the faithful of Holy Week's approach and the mysteries of Christ's Passion, Death, and Resurrection.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This special scene can only be seen once a year inside St. Peter\u2019s Basilica.
