ANTONIO CORBÍ
Parish priest of Saint Nicholas

In 1420, he was appointed rector of the Church of Saint Nicholas, then bishop-cardinal, and later elected Pope Callixtus III. Callixtus III established that, from then on, the rector of the church would always be the Roman Pontiff and that the person in charge of the church would be the vice-rector.

The meeting between the papal rector and his deputy parish priest came about thanks to the new bell. The bell previously used in the parish had been in need of replacement—and it seemed only fitting that the new bell should be blessed by the boss in Rome.

FR. ANTONIO CORBÍ
Parish priest of Saint Nicholas

The bell had to be renewed because it was broken. It was remade last year, and in the Valencian tradition bells also have a dedication. We dedicated it to Pope Leo XIV with the date of his election, May 8, and as rector of the Church of Saint Nicholas. Today we brought the bell to the Pope so he could bless it. We reminded him of that tradition, which he listened to with great pleasure and warmth.

The church of St. Nicholas is called the “Spanish Sistine Chapel,” not only because it is beautiful, but also because it was restored by the same man who restored the real Sistine Chapel.

FR.
