Jack Wall attended the same Chicago parish and schools as Pope Leo and he described the Society's mission as \u201csimple but profound\u201d: it is to build up flourishing Catholic communities among the poorest parts of the United States. And they have been doing this for over a century:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FR. JACK WALL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President, Catholic Extension Society<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The United States was blessed by a very energetic priest by the name of Francis Clement Kelley and he came as a missioner from Canada into the United States just when the United States ceased being a 'mission country'. And so [before] those days, Propagation of the Faith was supporting the United States. 1905, Pius X came along and said 'you're on your own' but there were still very very poor parts of the United States.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1910, Pope Pius X granted the Society canonical status. Because of this, the Society has maintained relations with each pope since that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FR. JACK WALL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President, Catholic Extension Society<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We are a papal society, so one of the pontifical societies in the Church. And so the closeness to the pope has always been critical and we've always made the opportunity to meet with him. <\/em>the pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But Pope Leo obviously brings this immediate awareness of the American experience. And since our focus is in the United States and in its territories, we know he knows us. Ad it's a powerful thing to hear his voice and his persona saying, you know, 'I get you, I know what what you are about; we absolutely believe in you.'<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his audience with the Catholic Extension<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Society, Pope Leo expressed the fundamentally Christian character of the organization, and why its mission was still necessary even today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>POPE LEO XIV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The same zeal that moved the Christians of the early Church to share the news of Jesus Christ in the gift of the Spirit inspired your founder, Fr. Francis Clement Kelley over 120 years ago.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This missionary enthusiasm is still needed today and so I would like to thank you for your continued efforts to minister to the needs of the poorer Catholic communities, both in the United States and abroad.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A large part of the Society's work, for example, is focused on rebuilding 600 Catholic churches and 25 schools in Puerto Rico after the U.S. territory was ravaged by a hurricane in 2017\u2014no small task.
