The move is both unexpected and strategic, reflecting his balanced approach to leading the Church and his desire to build bridges across its different sectors.

The pope has chosen Maria Montserrat Alvarado as the new Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication. Succeeding Paolo Ruffini starting November 1, she will become the second lay person—and first lay woman specifically—to head a Vatican department.

The appointment sends several messages. For one, the Holy See’s communications has traditionally run by Italians. Alvarado will bring a more international perspective.

While Mexican, she also has a definite American background, having studied and earned degrees at universities in Florida and Washington, D.C.

Although she has never held a position inside the Vatican, she is no stranger to religious affairs. From 2009 to 2023, she held leadership roles at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty.

But she is best known for her work at EWTN News, the Catholic television network. There she served as president and chief operating officer. Following a controversial phase between EWTN and Pope Francis, she guided the network toward a more moderate and balanced tone.

By placing women and laypeople in some of the Vatican's most senior leadership positions, Pope Leo continues the work of Francis. At the same time, he must strike a balance with the more traditional sectors of the Church.

The Vatican’s Dicastery for Communications, meanwhile, is the largest department. This means Alvarado will have to oversee its extensive staff and operations, all while managing the pope's communication to the world.

Pope Leo XIV has made a major change to the Vatican’s communications leadership.
