The pope has chosen Maria Montserrat Alvarado as the new Prefect of the Vatican\u2019s Dicastery for Communication. Succeeding Paolo Ruffini starting November 1, she will become the second lay person\u2014and first lay woman specifically\u2014to head a Vatican department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The appointment sends several messages. For one, the Holy See\u2019s communications has traditionally run by Italians. Alvarado will bring a more international perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
