Waiting to bid him farewell was the King of Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything proceeded normally. King Felipe VI accompanied Pope Leo XIV to the foot of the boarding stairs. After what all thought was a farewell to Spanish soil, the pope then boarded the Iberia airlines plane for his ride back home, which was scheduled to land in Rome at 8:40pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The press was already waiting inside the aircraft, where it is customary for the Pope to answer questions from journalists once the plane has taken off. It was 4:24pm, Canary Islands time, and then this happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ARTURO ANASTASIO<\/strong><br><em>Rome Reports Cameraman (on the papal flight)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Today an unusual unforeseen incident took place on the Iberia papal flight, which was supposed to take us from Tenerife to Rome. Apparently, a serious technical problem with the engine forced Iberia to request another flight from Madrid to Tenerife in order to then take us to Rome. It was a somewhat strange moment, with a great deal of confusion, especially because we did not understand what was happening. The Pope disembarked from the plane and took another flight, specifically one offered by the Spanish Royal Household, while we remained on board. In the end, Iberia arranged for another flight. And now we are waiting to return to Rome on a different aircraft.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few minutes later, it became clear that something was wrong as the aircraft technicians moved about. One of them knocked on the aircraft door, the door opened\u2014there was a technical difficulty with the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the royal delegation approached the aircraft again. Felipe VI climbed the stairs and, together with the Pope, exited the plane and moved to an airport lounge while technicians tried to fix the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aircraft failed the flight inspection when a malfunction in one of the engines was confirmed. It was then that the King offered the Pope his Falcon jet, the official aircraft of the Spanish Royal Household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But because of the aircraft\u2019s limited capacity, not everyone could board. Traveling with Pope Leo were Cardinals Parolin and Artime, two other senior officials from the Secretariat of State, and the Pope\u2019s two personal secretaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At around 6:20pm, the royal Falcon took off from Tenerife with the pope on board\u2014which is probably not where he ever expected he would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining passengers, including part of the Vatican delegation and more than 80 journalists, had to remain at the airport and wait for another flight traveling from Madrid to the Canary Islands. Which means no usual post-trip press conference for them.
