At the Vatican, the pope presides over a special Mass to mark the occasion. But he is not alone. He is joined by the metropolitan archbishops appointed during the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LEO XIV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Dear friends, it is important for us today to look to these two Saints \u2014 Peter and Paul \u2014 to understand how we, in turn, can be apostles and builders of unity, and generous servants of the truth in charity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty-five new metropolitan archbishops received the pallium, woven from the wool of the lambs presented to the pope on the feast of Saint Agnes. Pope Leo reminded them of what it symbolizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LEO XIV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>These bands of white wool adorned with crosses indeed express the commitment of every Shepherd \u2014 and also of every Christian \u2014 to take upon their shoulders the brothers and sisters entrusted to them, like so many lambs of the Lord\u2019s flock, and to sacrifice their energy, time, effort and even their lives for them. They do so in order that the Gospel may reach everyone, and the whole world may find in it harmony and concord.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But above all, Leo XIV sent a message calling for unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LEO XIV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In the same way, communion within the Church is not built by clinging rigidly to one\u2019s own position, but by seeking, in all hearts, points of encounter in the Truth, in whose light alone each person becomes a means of growth for another.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this day, the statue of Saint Peter is ceremonially dressed, continuing one of the traditions that marks the feast of the first pope, celebrated alongside his 267th successor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every June 29, the Church celebrates Saints Peter and Paul, the patron saints of Rome.
