ROBERTO REGOLI
President of the Ratzinger Foundation

During the post-conciliar period, disagreements developed between Archbishop Lefebvre and Pope Paul VI, which led to canonical penalties against the archbishop.

In 1976, an historic meeting between the two took place in Castel Gandolfo. According to the minutes signed by Cardinal Benelli, Paul VI said the following to Lefebvre:

The position you have always taken is that of an antipope […]. You have judged the pope to be unfaithful to the faith, of which he is the supreme guardian […]. If that were the case, I would have to resign and invite you to take my place in leading the Church.

But the most tense moment came under John Paul II, when the Fraternity sought to consecrate four bishops. Rome, through then-Cardinal Ratzinger, proposed alternative solutions.

P. ROBERTO REGOLI
President of the Ratzinger Foundation

The Holy See, through then-Cardinal Ratzinger, had offered a possible solution to the conflict, including the appointment of a bishop at a later stage. However, the Society of St. Pius X did not want to enter a dialogue.

So what happened? Here you can see it. These are the ordinations from ’88. The Fraternity went ahead with a schismatic act, and the appropriate penalties were imposed on it.

P. ROBERTO REGOLI
President of the Ratzinger Foundation

At that point, in 1988, they were imposed ipso facto—that is, there was no need even to declare them. On the part of the Holy See, excommunication was imposed. The consecrators and the four consecrated individuals were excommunicated ipso facto for what they had done

When Benedict became pope, he tried to build a bridge. In 2009, he lifted their excommunication.

P. ROBERTO REGOLI
President of the Ratzinger Foundation

We called on them to take a step forward by fully accepting the Council and the subsequent teaching of the popes. But the Fraternity did not accept the offer.

Even Pope Francis tried it during the Jubilee of Mercy in 2016, but there was no response then either. Leo XIV has taken a clear position , but we’ll have to keep an eye on developments.

P. There have always been ambiguities, in the sense that the excommunication was clear, but there had never been a formal declaration of schism in the strict sense. This time, the Vatican and Pope Leo XIV himself have declared that if the Fraternity were to proceed with episcopal ordinations, it would find itself in a state of schism.

The Society of St. Pius X was founded by Lefebvre in 1970.
