It can happen. It says that these matters are resolved in a case by case basis. And that is indeed the case, because we are dealing with a very serious situation.

The principal novelty found in the explanation of the decree is that it clarifies that not everyone connected with the Society is excommunicated. Those who fall under the sanction must meet the following requirements.

FERNANDO PUIG
Rector, Pontifical University of the Holy Cross
There are two elements. The first one in internal: accepting separation from the Pope, his teaching and teachings from the Vatican Council. The second is external: showing that separation by taking part in the Society's activities, especially its liturigal celebrations, which its members regard as the only valid ones.

And in relation to this, as our expert points out, the Church sends a subliminal message.

FERNANDO PUIG
Rector, Pontifical University of the Holy Cross

The Holy See has made all of these questions public and is encouraging the faithful to distance themselves from the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X.

The Holy See is saying that to all, including in an implicit way to the bishops themselves. All sanctions in the Church are for medicinal purposes, including excommunication. “Bye, we have had to pale you under sanction. Get out of there”.

The Holy See has, therefore, put in place measures for those who do wish to turn back. For priests there exists an incorporation process by a bishop, and for the lay, a formal profession of faith and adhesion to the Magisterium of the Church.

It is important to understand that these measures taken by the Vatican are medicinal, not punitive, that is, they aim to achieve the return of the SSPX back into full communion with the Church.

Ana Torres Fonseca The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published an excommunication decree and an explanation following the episcopal ordinations performed by the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X without papal mandate.
