Its role is to ensure the Holy See has the funds and resources it needs to carry out its activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to its latest balance sheet, APSA\u2019s net assets stand at 2.686 billion euros, 89 million euros more than the previous year. This figure includes cash, but also real estate, investments, and gold reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FR. ROBERT GAHL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professor and Director, Program of Church Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>some of us who watch the Vatican finances, we applaud when we see a report like we just received from the Holy See, but we'd like there to be greater transparency and more accountability to the lay faithful. In fact, I think that would really contribute to an increase in revenue because people would be more generous in making contributions to the Holy See insofar as we see a clear, transparent reporting of the finances.<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>APSA also manages an investment portfolio worth nearly 1.95 billion euros, belonging to the Holy See and other Vatican-related institutions.<em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FR. ROBERT GAHL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professor and Director, Program of Church Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anybody who's involved in investment should seek a return on investment. But in the report that's presented, it's presented as though seeking return on investment is some form of speculation, as though you were gambling. But in fact, it's a proper thing to seek profit. And this has been developed in Catholic social teaching. It's a good thing and it's a noble thing to seek profit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And if we look at the data that was provided at the end of July by the APSA, it looks like the return on investment was under 1%.<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The increase in assets is mainly due to two factors: the value of the Vatican\u2019s gold reserves rose by 40.8 million euros, and its properties increased by 39 million euros in value. Real estate remains APSA\u2019s main source of income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>FR. ROBERT GAHL<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professor and Director, Program of Church Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Real estate tends to be a very reliable. long-term investment it's also true that real estate can has the advantage of through rents and leases you can provide an annual revenue that can support ongoing operational costs and that's really a major way in which the holy see has used these real estate investments<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>they have over 5 000 properties 5 000 units and it brings in an amount of return on that investment per year, there would be something like if you calculate it out on the order of four, maybe $5,000 per unit.
