The election of Pope Leo XIV has brought a new dynamic to the Vatican. For the first time in decades, the pope is a native English speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I'm excited. I think we have an American Pope. So we have a new way of conversing. We just had one of our constituents, Montserrat Alvarado, who will be the first lay woman to become a prefect of, in this case, communications. And she's going to be the voice of the church. She's going to be guiding the voice of the church through the Pope and the Roman Curia.
<\/em>In this sense, English has quietly become the language that connects Catholics from every continent, making communication across cultures easier than ever.

<\/strong>We've got a new day. And as she was telling me yesterday, that the true language of the church isn't Italian, it's broken English. Broken English because every person in the church has had to learn English to deal with commerce in the church.
<\/em>Pope Leo XIV is a native English speaker, which Busch says is more than a coincidence. He believes the pope was elected at a time when the Church needed a leader who understands both the American and global context.

<\/strong>So, we have a pope that speaks very good English. And so it's the first time-- our Pope in the last papacy was not an English speaker. And we hadn't seen that in the previous papacies. But so it's really good. And I think we have somebody that understands America. America is not easy to understand. It's not like many other countries in Asia and Western Europe. And so it's not that we're perfect. But we are a major part of the Roman Catholic Church.
<\/em>The United States continues to play a significant role in supporting the Church's mission around the world.

<\/strong>We're the major contributors to the Vatican and support of the major basilicas and churches that need continued sponsorship. Over 300 churches there and Americans are involved in most of them.
<\/em>As Pope Leo XIV begins his pontificate, Busch believes the shared use of English can help strengthen communication across the universal Church while bringing the Vatican closer to millions of Catholics around the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
