In other words, they were professors who taught at the University of Salamanca.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Led by Francisco de Vitoria, the scholars drew on the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas to develop a school of thought rooted in human dignity and the Renaissance belief in the power of reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As children of God, all people have certain universal rights. And that leads to the whole question of whether or not war can be just. You cannot simply declare war without a reason.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n This rational played a key role in Spain's arrival in the Americas. It provided a legal basis for denouncing abuses, grounded in human dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FR.
