Pope Leo became a pilgrim at the Grotto of the Apparitions in Lourdes and prayed with thousands of the faithful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since 1858, Lourdes has welcomed millions of people every year and is the fourth most popular pilgrimage destination in the world. Like everyone else, Pope Leo XIV approached the rock where the Virgin Mary appeared, drank water from the spring, and lit a candle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He then said a prayer aloud, in which he asked the Virgin of Lourdes to watch over France, so that people can live in harmony and unity. He also prayed for those in government, the defense of human rights, and the right to live one\u2019s life to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also made a special request on behalf of the French people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
POPE LEO XIV<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Renew the faith and fervor of Christian families, who are so dear to your heart, so that they may live day by day in the presence of Jesus, in his grace, and with his support through the difficulties they face. May they be generously open to life, and may God awaken vocations within them, especially to the priesthood and religious life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n There was, of course, a prayer for the sick. They play such a central role at this shrine, where more than 7,000 healings have been recorded, 72 of which have been officially declared miraculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then, the pope did the same thing he did at the Almudena in Madrid: he presented the Virgin with a golden rose.
