The Holy See has confirmed the departure of Cardinal Mauro Gambetti as archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica.

The Franciscan was brought in by Pope Francis in 2020. Just three months later, the Argentine pontiff appointed him archpriest of St. Peter's and vicar general for Vatican City.

His next assignment will be Chieti-Vasto, an Italian archdiocese, where he will replace Bruno Forte, who had already submitted his resignation due to age.

Here is one of the most telling clues of Cardinal Gambetti’s new role. The Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto itself convened an extraordinary assembly the day before the papal appointment to “announce news relevant to the life of the archdiocese.”

This is consistent with speculation that Gambetti had already informed the canons of the Basilica of the date on which his appointment would be made official.

If this assumption were confirmed, Mauro Gambetti would have violated the rules of Pontifical Secrecy established by Pope Paul VI.

The departure marks one of the most significant transitions of Pope Leo XIV’s reign, bringing to a close five years marked by controversial incidents, such as the two acts of vandalism at the main altar, the proposed rooftop restaurant at the Basilica, and the listening spaces set up for those who did not wish to go to confession.
