Pope Francis: Inequality between rich and poor threatens democracy

2014-10-02

In a meeting with the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Pope Francis stressed that love and truth are needed when it comes to fighting against social and economic inequality

After welcoming the participants of the council's plenary assembly, the Pope called attention to the disparity that exists in the world between rich and poor.

The growth of such inequality, he said, "threatens inclusive and participatory democracy”.

POPE FRANCIS
"If globalization has greatly increased the collective wealth of the whole and of several individual states, it has also exacerbated the gaps between different social groups, creating new inequalities and poverty in those countries considered to be the richest.”

Pope Francis noted that their meeting marked the 5th anniversary of the publication of  'Caritas in Veritate' (Love in Truth). He said that this encyclical written by Benedict XVI is a fundamental document for the evangelization of society

POPE FRANCIS
"'Caritas in Veritate' has drawn attention to the benefits, but also to the dangers of globalization, when it is not oriented to the good of the people.”

The document argues that love and truth are essential elements in combatting problems with global development.

Concluding his address, the Pope reminded the members of the Pontifical Council that this encyclical is still relevant today.
