Pope sends condolences to Manchester after attack

May 23, 2017. After the deadly terrorist attack at Victoria Station in Manchester, England, the pope has sent his condolences to the victims and their families.

Can God be just and merciful at the same time?

There is no mercy without justice. This is the understood relationship between two apparently irreconcilable realities the pope is teaching about in this Jubilee.
Pope Francis explains that God does not want condemnation for anyone.

"No, God wanted to save Pilate, and even Judas. Everybody! The God of Mercy wants to save all, the challenge is that we let God enter into our hearts.”

On the other hand, Pope Francis explains that to be so attached to the law can cause serious injustices. Justice without mercy, he says, is simply revenge or hypocrisy. He reminds us that the Gospel describes the judges who acted this way.

"This path of living attached to the law would bring them far from love and justice. They followed the law, but neglected justice. They followed the law, but neglected love. They were role models: they were the role models. And Jesus had a word for these people: hypocrites.”

In his papal bull for the Jubilee, the pope said that justice is not the end, but a step toward repentance. It is a crucial step that allows people to experience forgiveness, tenderness and the mercy of God.
