Italian Cardinal Giovanni Canestri has died at the age of 96. The Archbishop Emeritus of Genoa, passed away on Wednesday April 29th. ;

He took part in the Second Vatican Council, making contributions on discussions about ecumenism and religious liberty. ;

He was appointed as the Archbishop of Cagliari in 1984. Four years later, he was named a Cardinal by John Paul II. ;

From 1987 until 1995, when he retired, he served as the Archbishop of Genoa. ;

On Thursday, at noon all the parish bells of his Archdiocese will ring to honor his life and service.

With his death, the number of cardinals stands at 222. The number of cardinal electors who are younger than 80 and can therefore vote in a conclave, remains at 120. ;
