(ONLY VIDEO) This morning, the oath was taken by the officials and personnel—both ecclesiastical and lay—assigned to the conclave. One by one, they recited the oath, sealing their commitment to maintain absolute confidentiality about everything related to the conclave, even long after it ends. Any attempt to break the oath of secrecy is punished with automatic excommunication by the Holy See.

The ceremony took place in the Pauline Chapel of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, in accordance with the apostolic constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, promulgated by Pope John Paul II on February 22, 1996.

This oath is taken by all individuals involved in the conclave, whether religious or lay, as long as their participation has been approved by the Cardinal Camerlengo and the three assisting cardinals. Doctors, Swiss Guards, confessors, and other support staff first received a detailed explanation of the meaning of the oath, and then personally recited and signed the official form in the presence of Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell.
